CSI Lab program for High School Scouts at UMass Medical Center on April 20

Girl Scouts of Central & Western Massachusetts Council and UMass Medical center in Shrewsbury have combined to offer Senior & Ambassador Scouts a special school vacation week program on Tuesday, April 20 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
CSI and Genetics Lab: Working as lab technicians we have two tasks
1) we must solve a crime!
2) we need to test for a disease!
Our first task…A jewelry store was robbed and the perpetrator appeared to cut him/herself on the broken store window; blood was found on glass at the scene of the crime. The blood-spattered shards of glass were brought to our forensics lab to analyze the DNA to determine who committed the crime!!
Our second task of the day is to determine the genotype of a mother, father and their fetus. We’ll need to use Gel Electrophoresis (a really cool technique for separating and analyzing mixtures using electricity) to determine if Jim, Jane and their fetus carry the genes for cystic fibrosis. This information can be used to calculate the probability of the couple’s next child having the disease. It’s a tough job, but SOMEBODY’s gotta do it.
This event is for Troops, Juliette Scouts, and individual Scouts from Troops. Safety-wise rules apply for Troops. Juliette and individual Scouts must attend with an adult.
Event #4739
Registration fee is $8 per Scout.
Registration will end when 24 Scouts have registered or on March 19.
As of Feb. 25, there were 14 slots available.
To register complete the online registration form at the Central & Western Massachusetts Council Web site and pre-pay with a credit card.
